Screw and cement augmentation of patella defects in knee arthroplasty

چکیده
BACKGROUND At primary and revision knee arthroplasty, a defi cient patella with a contained or uncontained defect is often encountered,1,2 especially in the presence of longstanding maltracking. In these cases, reconstruction is diffi cult, leaving an unsupported implant. Following the good outcomes achieved using cement fi xation of large defects of the tibial plateau augmented with screws,3 we describe a technique to address patella defects in cases where patella tracking is a problem and would compromise the fi nal result.

Review article: Treatments for bone loss in revision total knee arthroplasty.
Bone deficiency hinders implant alignment and stabilisation of the bone-implant interface in revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Treatments for bone defects include bone cement, bone cement with screw reinforcement, metal augments, impaction bone grafts, structural allografts, and tantalum, depending on the location and size of the defects. Small defects are usually treated with cement, cem...

The management of patellae with a severe bony deficiency during revision total knee arthroplasty is a challenging problem. However, using a technique of augmentation with transcortical wiring of an onlay-type prosthesis allowed the authors to revise a deficient patellae successfully. After making the decision to revise the existing patellar component, the procedure was found to be technically s...

متن کامل[Cement plug embedded in the patella: a rare complication of total knee arthroplasty.
An unusual delayed complication of total knee arthroplasty involving the unresurfaced patella is described. The complication is due to the impaction of a loose cement plug used to seal the defect left by the femoral intramedullary alignment rod. The origin, presentation, and management are discussed.
